Political science was one among the few subjects, with which our college was established in 1956. Since students were very few in those days, the department was named along with economics for administrative convenience the Department of Political Science and Economics with one Lecturer in charge of each subject. The Political Science department began with Smt. Alpana Sen, who was later joined by Smt. Indira Dasgupta and Smt. Krishna Duttagupta, as students number increased. By 1960 the department was functioning in three sections with almost 100 students in each. In 1965, the Honours course was sanctioned, number of permanent posts increased and more teachers joined the department — Smt. Kana Sengupta , Smt. Latika Basu, Smt. Reba Chatterjee and Smt. Rama Chakraborty. The department now came to have five full time, hard working teachers, a well equipped library, a departmental room with a departmental library for honours students.
Over these last six decades besides general lecture classes , tutorials are arranged where students are guided in their academic endeavour. The Teachers take initiative for revision classes in the latter half of each session. Special effort and arrangement for tutorials are taken for helping the weaker ones. It has been observed by the teachers that the students are always enthusiastic about group discussions, debates and class, seminar which are organized from time to time. The interest and enthusiasm of the young minds have always motivated the faculty members to overcome the difficulties of handling such over hearing numbers .At present the department is in charge of three full time teachers Prof. Jayasree Banerjee, Prof. Soma Ghosh (On lien), Smt. Debjani Bhattacharya. Three Guest Lecturers Shri Tapas Paul, Smt. Sreyasi Ghosh and Smt. Paramita Chattopadhyay and one visiting Prof. Kuntal Mukherjee are asset to our . It is a matter of faculty Dr. Soma Ghosh, acquired the post of Principal in Hiralal Majumdar College (under WBSU) in 2015.
The faculty members are associated with West Bengal Political science Association, Council for Political Studies, Kolkata, RBU’s Distance Education Programme in Post- Graduate Studies and soon they also actively participate as external examiners, moderators and paper-setters for other universities.
A good number of Honours students have developed interest and capability to pursue Post-Graduate studies in Political Science, Sociology, Journalism and Mass Communication. Thus the rate of students of the department seeking higher education is quite high. It has been observed that almost sixty percent of our students, pursuing Post –Graduation in different Universities. One of our students Ms. Nitu Podder attained First Class First position in 2008 University Examination.
Many of the students intend to join the State Civil Science. After graduation most of them engage themselves in School teaching, in small-scale industries or private organizations.
Since its inception, the faculty members along with the students are very enthusiastic about organizing and participated in seminars, workshop, symposium of various degrees. We hope to carry forward our legacy and enthuse our students for their
